> ℹ️ The Flow and Position Calculator is available for FlumeGate sites in FLOW or POSITION mode.

The Flow and Position Calculator uses the gate geometry and the given flow and position values to calculate either:

- The gate position settings required to pass a specified flow rate
- The flow rate that will be passed at given position settings.

The calculator can be useful when you need to operate the gate manually for some reason so you can use the Gate Position Setpoint controls to configure the appropriate position setpoint for the gate.

> ℹ️ The calculator doesn't change the gate flow or position, it just calculates the settings required for a given position or flow. You can optionally apply the settings after you have finished the calculation.

# What happens if there is more than one gate?

If there is more than one gate you will need to perform a separate calculation for each gate.

> ℹ️ If all the gates have the same dimensions you could extrapolate your calculations for a single gate. For example, you could perform a position calculation for one gate and multiply the resulting flow by the number of gates that you adjust to that position.

# Calculate the gate position or flow rate

> ℹ️ The Flow and Position Calculator is available for any Flow Setpoint or Position Setpoint tag.

> ℹ️ If your calculations do not work as expected please:
> ℹ️ 
> ℹ️ - Poll the gate to ensure that the flow and position tag values are up-to-date.
> ℹ️ - Ensure that the FlumeGate dimensions have been correctly configured - the following tags are required for the calculations:
> ℹ️   - GATE_WIDTH
> ℹ️   - GATE_RADIUS
> ℹ️   - GATE_CLOSE_ANGLE

1. Poll the gate to ensure that your tag values are up-to-date.
2. On the Tag Details screen tap the Calculator button to open the **Flow and Position Calculator**.
3. Enter a target value depending on the type of calculation that you want to perform:  
*Flow* - specify a flow rate and calculate the required gate position  
*Gate Position *- specify a gate position and calculate the resulting flow rate.   
(Note that the calculator assumes that you want to change *from* the current position or flow but you can edit these default values if necessary.)
4. Click **Calculate** to calculate the gate flow or position.
5. Click **Apply** to change the setpoint to this calculated value.
6. On the Tag Details screen, select **Update** to send the value to the gate and wait to confirm that the setting is applied.
