# What is Planning?

Planning is the process of deciding what orders will run on the plan day, how the orders will be sequenced and where the water to supply the orders will come from.

## Planning Areas and Planning Groups

A planning area is a type of area that can be used as the basis of a plan for order scheduling. Planning areas must be continuous, but they are commonly grouped in Planning Groups which can contain one or more planning areas including non-contiguous planning areas.

To use a planning area for planning, it must be *Active*. Active planning areas may not overlap with other planning areas. Only active planning areas and groups can be selected in the Planning screen. See [https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/NWNC/pages/2000978569](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/NWNC/pages/2000978569) and [https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/NWNC/pages/2000978680](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/NWNC/pages/2000978680) for more details.

## The Planning Process

As a Planner, log in to NetworkConnect and you will automatically be taken to the Planning screen.

- [Log in](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/NC/pages/3033333761/Planning#Logging-In-as-an-Active-Planner) to your planning area or group as the active planner.
- [Create a plan](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/NC/pages/3033333793) for the chosen day.
- [Create segments](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/NC/pages/3033333833) (heads) to organise the plan and assign unscheduled orders to segments. This links the start and finish time of orders and allows you to reduce flow changes. There are two ways of doing this:
  - **Automatically** - let the application automatically create and populate the segments for you.
  - **Manually** - by creating segments and dragging the unscheduled orders into segments.

You can also use a mixture of these options.

- [Publish the plan](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/NC/pages/3033333922) which makes the planned orders confirmable and sends a [notification](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/NC/pages/3033333970) to irrigators asking them to confirm their orders.

# Planning Screen

The Planning screen is in the Delivery section. From here you can view existing plans and create new plans.

# Logging In

## Logging in as an Active Planner

> ℹ️ **Note**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ You can only create and edit plans for areas where you are assigned the Planner or Supervisor role.

Use the **View Plan** dialog to select an area or group. If the area is currently being planned, the padlock icon beside the area will be locked. If it is available for planning, it will be unlocked.

Select an available area and click **View** to log in as the active planner and go to the most recent plan for the area. (If the area you are logging into doesn’t have any plans, a new plan will automatically be created.

> ℹ️ **Note**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - **Only one planner can be assigned as the active planner for an area** - if there is a planner already assigned to the area, the area will be locked and you will only be able to log in in *View Only* mode.
> ℹ️ - **You can only be the active planner for one area at a time** - if you are already the active planner for a different area, you’ll be prompted to assign an after-hours contact for that area which will log you out as the active planner for that area.

Once you have successfully logged in as the active planner the Plan Details screen will open where you can view existing plans or create new plans.

> ℹ️ **Note**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ If you switch to a different NetworkConnect screen and then return to the Planning section you don’t need to reselect your Planning Area, you’ll be taken back to the plan that you were logged into. If you DO want to switch areas, use the **Switch Planning Area** option on the Plan Details screen menu.

## Logging in to View Only Mode

If there is already an active planner assigned to an area, the area icon will be locked. Click on the area to see the name of the current planner.

Click View and the Plan Details screen will open in View Only mode (the Schedule button at the top right of the Plan Details screen will be replaced with a View Only button). In this mode you can view the plan and order details but you can’t create plans or make any changes to existing plans.

# **Resetting the Active Planner**

In some cases a planner may not successfully log out of a planning area (for example, after a browser crash). In this case, an Area Administrator can remove the assigned planner and make the area available again.

To remove the current planner from an area, in the Plan Details screen click the **Remove Planner** icon beside the planner’s name. You’ll be prompted to select a contact person for the planning area and the area will then be available for a new planner to log in.

# Configure Flow Ranges

The Configuration option on the Planning screen is where you can specify flow ranges for segments created by the auto-scheduler. See [https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/NC/pages/3033333833](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/NC/pages/3033333833) for more details.
