# The Auto-Scheduling Process

When you select the Auto-Scheduler from the Plan Details screen the following process is followed:

- The auto-scheduler sorts the orders that are associated with a shared resource (upstream regulator or pipeline) and those that aren’t.
- For each group, the auto-scheduler sorts the orders by requested start time.
- The auto-scheduler then adds the orders to segments:
  - Orders with the same parent regulator are kept together in the same segments where possible and are linked.
  - Orders without a parent regulator are added to segments based on the segment flow rate and are unlinked.
  - If there are no suitable existing segments available, new segments can be created using the specified flow and linking properties for [auto-created segments](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/NC/pages/3033333833/Auto-Scheduling#Configuring-Segment-Properties).

The scheduling process also checks segment capacity and maximum flow constraints for the segments and the plan when scheduling orders. Orders that can’t be successfully auto-scheduled will remain in the Unscheduled Orders list.

Once the auto-scheduling process is complete you can continue to edit the segments manually if necessary until you are ready to publish the plan.

# Configuring Auto-Scheduling

## Setting up Parent Regulator Relations

To use the auto-scheduling tool you must [Configure Regulator-Outlet Relations](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/NC/pages/3032055810) so the auto-scheduler knows which orders share a parent regulator.

## Configuring Segment Properties

Use the Configuration option on the Planning screen to set up the flow ranges and the linking behaviour of segments that are created by the Auto-Scheduler. See [Configuring Segment Properties for Auto-Scheduling](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/NC/pages/3033333948/Configuring+Planning+Features+for+Planners#Configuring-Segment-Properties-for-Auto-Scheduling) for more details.
